Orangeberry Book Tours - Death in Bagheria by Susan Russo Anderson
Orangeberry Spring Fling - Dark Lady of Doona by Christine Frost
Review: Death In Bagheria (A Serafina Florio Mystery, #3) by Susan Russo Anderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
List the places mentioned in the book. Villa Caterina, Sicily, Bagheria, Genoa, France, Prizzi, Boston, New Orleans, New York, Europe, Egypt.
What did you think of the story structure? I felt that the story was told in chunks and it was effective for this story, although I felt it got stunted in some sections but only very slightly.
Which did you find more appealing, the introduction or the conclusion? The conclusion was wonderful as everything was wrapped up nicely

Martina “Marty” Hart is really nice. At least, that’s what people think.
It’s Marty’s junior year at Minster High. Minster’s a small town where making great grades, smiling pretty, helping old people, running the new-student Welcoming Committee, and putting up decorations for all the dances–including the totally awful Hot Shot fall hunting celebration–gets you … what? Marty’s not sure.
Instead of dreaming about a sororities-and-frats future at nearby University of Michigan, she’s restless, searching for a way out of the box her controlling mother and best frenemy Sarah have locked her in. When Lil–don’t call her Lily!–Hatfield transfers to Minster, Marty gets her chance. Lil’s different. She smokes, wears black, listens to angry punk records, and lives in a weird trailer with her mother. Lil has secrets–secrets that make her a target for all the gossiping and online bullying Minster can muster. But so does Marty. And Marty sees something different in Lil. Something honest. Something real.
Playing Nice is the achingly real story of a girl who’s been following the rules for so long she’s forgotten who she was when she started. It’s about falling in love with the wrong people and not seeing the right ones, about the moments in life when you step out of line, take a chance … and begin to break free.

Blue Hearts of Mars by Nicole Grotepas
Retta Heikkinen knows the unspoken rule of society: love between androids and humans is forbidden. A simple enough edict until Hemingway Koskinen spends an evening charming her with his intense gaze, bewitching smile, and sparkling conversation that hints at so much more than the usual obsessions of high school boys. Rules were meant to be cast aside, especially when love beckons.
If only it were as simple as being in love.
Trouble is brewing, not just for Hemingway--for all androids. Secrets have been kept, lies propagated, and Retta soon discovers that a frightening future awaits thousands of androids if she doesn’t do something to stop it. Worse yet, she will lose the one love she’s ever endangered herself for: Hemingway.
Praise
"Nothing like I've read before. A true original story! Everything is so well described. Now if they could make a follow up book and movie, that would be great!" ~Mrs. Z (Amazon)
"I was addicted to this book from the beginning. Life on Mars was very real and not at all a sci fi world I didn't understand . . . I found myself rooting for Retta and Hemingway from the very beginning. Easy reading, couldn't put it down and had it read in a weekend. Waiting for a sequel!" ~TNielsen (Amazon)
"The ending of this book is exceptional. While it was different from what I imagined, the way the author brought in a shocking revelation was amazing. I probably reread the last chapter 3 times letting it sink in and the meaning behind it. It was truly beautiful . . . I would love to see more of Retta and Hemingway!" ~Kat Meyer, (Goodreads)
"I love how the author populated Mars . . . so descriptive and comprehensive . . . I could clearly picture everything as if I was seeing the movie &/or was along for the ride. . . . Retta, the main character, is strong, opinionated, and a great champion for her cause." ~Megan (Amazon)
"I had been in the worst reading slump ever and came across this on Goodreads and thought I'd give it a try. Well, I was pleasantly surprised on how funny and exciting and mysterious it was . . . Mei, Retta's bff, had me laughing out loud quite a bit as well as Retta herself. I'd definitely hang out with those two." ~Deanneluvbooks (Goodreads)

Orangeberry Book Tours – Tainted Love: The Faith McKenzie Story by Erin Cawood
For anyone in a relationship, the words ‘we need to talk’ can only mean one thing. In the last twenty-two years, the McKenzies have been through it, survived it, learned by it, and grown stronger from it, because life didn’t stop for breath when they needed it. Amongst the tears and the tragedies, the hopes and happiness, they’ve built something amazing: a happy family, a luxury lifestyle and a booming empire. Don’t they deserve to have it all?
But for the perfect wife, those four sinister words mean something entirely different. They’re a summons into a private world where what happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors.
Faith has no doubt in Calvin’s undying love for her. It’s what kept her sane in the darkest hours. If only she could figure out what it is she does wrong… because it’s rapidly becoming apparent their tainted love is running out of time.
A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
1 in 4 woman will be affected by domestic abuse. 50% of the royalties from sales of this series will be donated to charities supporting those affected by abusive relationships.
EXCERPT:
You have to promise me something…
Promise me you won’t tell a soul what you are about to read? Unless something happens to me, no one needs to know.
My babies, Georgia and Caleb, only need to know what I have told them. I am unhappy. I have been unhappy for a long time. And therefore, I have gone away to heal my heart, my mind, and my spirit. They’ll understand, for me, their younger sisters are part of the healing process, and this is why I have taken the girls with me. I have promised to return, and I will. Somehow I’ll find another way into Georgia and Caleb’s lives. But… I’ll never go back.
I tell myself every day I should be thankful for what I have. Despite my sad situation I have you, my amazing younger brother. You’ve flourished into an all-state star quarterback and earned a scholarship to one of the best medical schools in the country. I have three wonderful daughters who still see fairy tales and dreams, and know how to reach for the sky. The eldest has high grades and a warm heart for children in need. She’s taken herself down the path to follow Daddy into the family profession. The younger ones are a delight. Barely walking, already they have flair for drama, song, and dance. I see stars in their eyes and fame on their horizons.
And my son is… well, he’s frustrating. He can whip a top grade out of the bag without studying. But his priorities lay elsewhere for so many years. Then, one day he came home with college applications, a volunteering job in the community, and a path he’d chosen on his own. I’m not quite sure when it happened, but it was some divine intervention for which I’ll be forever indebted.
We own a five bedroom house in the Hamptons, with vast gardens where I spend my days tending to roses and uprooting weeds. If I’m not in my gardens, I partake in coffee mornings, which entail little coffee and lots of shopping. I no longer try anything on in the store; I donate it to charity if it doesn’t fit. I have lunch at the tennis club where I no longer play tennis; an injury took me out of the game some years ago.
My husband and I have a regular sitter and spend many evenings at the social clubs of which we’re members. We dine on lavish food, drink the finest wines, and dance past the stroke of midnight. I drive a swift little roadster, top down, through summer, and a tough terrain SUV in the winter. I have a lot to be thankful for… including twenty-two years of marriage.
Oh, how I wish I could tell you this was some mid-life crisis! That with my oldest children flying the nest, I felt my life half-empty. I’m sure if you ask Calvin, it’s how he’ll explain our sudden departure from his life. But it’s quite the opposite, in fact.
I know it’s been years since we last spoke, and how angry you were when you left. But there are things I need you to know, little brother, and these things I kept hidden from you all.

Erin Cawood – The Books that have Changed My Life
The Books that have Changed My Life
by Erin Cawood
I have made many great books in my life, but these are the books which have had a lasting effect on me as person and a writer.
Baby Come Back by Erica Spindler
Link to book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Baby-Come-Silhouette-Special-Edition/dp/0373099037
Link to image http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51cCIZOcUSL.Image._AA300_.jpg
This is the very first adult romance novel I read. I was about to turn fourteen and remember being swept away in this all-consuming story of adults with unhealed hurt and unforgotten love, teens discovering love for the first time. Alice and Hayes have stayed with me for … seventeen years… Okay, now I feel old! I remember blushing at the intimate scenes, being heartbroken when everything fell apart and a rush of joy at the end and… Oh! That epilogue! I think it’s safe to say without discovering romance in these pages I wouldn’t be a romance writer.
The Gift by Danielle Steele
Link to book http://daniellesteel.com/blog/the-gift/
Link to image http://daniellesteel.com/wp-content/themes/danielle-steel/images/uk-covers/the-gift.jpg
Maribeth and Tommy are possibly my favourite characters of all time. My eldest sister lent me her copy of The Gift on a train ride when I was fourteen. It opens with a tragedy for Tommy and I was lost in the 50’s as Steele swept me into Maribeth story. She’s abandoned by her family for something we shrug at today. I own three copies of this book and their romance and their journey will forever hold a special place in my heart. I finished reading The Gift and I knew I was going to be a published author. It was my calling.
Angels by Marian Keyes
Link to book http://www.mariankeyes.com/Books/Angels
Link to image http://www.mariankeyes.com/site/MAKE/UploadedResources/angels_book_thumb_3D.png
In my teenage years I wrote novellas along the same lines of Harlequin Series Romance. Then I discovered Angels by Marian Keyes. Maggie Walsh’s story was fresh and funny, but she dealt with real life. She tipped her life upside down and handled something as serious as her husband’s affair by running off to the land of make believe, Los Angeles… And the ending! Oh it completely took me by surprise but I loved it. I love Marian Keyes. I was a little late catching on to chick-lit but it completely transformed my writing style and it wasn’t long after reading Angels I began writing my first novel.
Family Magic by Patti Larsen

Link to image http://pattilarsen.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/FamilyMagic275.jpg
About eighteen months ago I was asked to review a book. I opened the first page and I can’t tell you how much I dreaded reading this book. I’m thirty and a strictly romance kind of girl. It was young adult paranormal and it’s written in first person… ah, I can’t stand first person! But … I LOVED IT! I couldn’t put it down and now I’m completely swept up in Sydlynn Hayle’s world that I spend hours speculating about what’s going to happen in the next books. So these days I read anything that captures my attention. It doesn’t matter what genre because you just don’t know what amazing books your missing if you have a genre prejudice and as for first person…? Tainted Love is written in first person. Family Magic changed me as a reader and a writer.
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
Link to book http://pattilarsen.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/FamilyMagic275.jpg
I don’t know what to tell you about Lou and Will from Jojo Moyes’s Me Before You except it’s been a year since I read this book and I’m still reeling from their story. I downloaded the sample on my phone and was swept away. So I bought the book and continued reading Lou’s struggle outside her comfort zone with Will who’s in a life he doesn’t want. My battery died on my phone while I was walking through town, still reading, so I walked into the nearest book store and bought the book again! I didn’t take my head out of it until I finished. I’ve never cried reading a book, but I sobbed through the last chapters. Me Before You taught me it’s okay to take a sensitive subject such as assisted suicide and take your readers on an emotional journey of a lifetime. It’s okay to break the rules for the sake of writing a better story. It’s okay to make your readers cry.
Tainted Love by Erin Cawood

I know, it seems a little corny to put my own book on this list but before I wrote Tainted Love I knew very little about the world of Domestic Abuse. I was researching for another storyline in the Valentina Secrets series and although I knew Faith’s story, I shied away from writing it because at the end of the day we’re told to write what you know and to be honest, I didn’t think I could. But Faith, bless her, eventually she took over my fingers and wrote her story herself, haha!
Once Tainted Love was released readers began telling me they identified with Faith and could relate to her story. I began to see how prevalent domestic abuse still is in today’s society and just because we don’t talk about it, it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Advocating for victims and survivors, and raising awareness of domestic abuse is something that is close to my heart. I donate 50% of the royalties I receive from the Valentina Secrets Series to charities supporting victims of domestic abuse and it’s all down to Faith McKenzie. She has changed the very core of who I am.

Review: Tainted Love: The Faith McKenzie Story by Erin Cawood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Did you like the ending? Honestly, I didn't. She finally found happiness and he found her and killed her. However, as much as I didn't like the ending, it was a real ending. Not all abuse stories have a happy ending.
Question to author? If she knew someone that went through this? Was this personal experience?
How would you rewrite story? I would have put Cal in jail for all the abuse. Faith and her children would have remained with John.

Kathleen Shoop – How To Write Fiction & Become a Better Writer
What is your favorite color? Red
What is your favorite food? seafood
What’s your favorite place in the entire world? Kiawah Island, South Carolina. It’s absolute heaven.
How has your upbringing influenced your writing? See the above family question
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated? I had so much fun growing up, hanging out with friends, experiencing all the stuff every human does, but I kept replaying certain scenes and events in my head and reliving them that way, almost as though recalling them was better than originally living them. I kept thinking, “I have to write this down, I have to capture this moment, this feeling, this person!” At the same time, I found myself rambling on and on about all sorts of things that I felt passionate about, but it occurred to me, hearing someone’s voice for too long is grating. It was then I figured, “Hey, write it down then if someone wants to read what I think, they’ll read it…” No grating necessary. That combined with my family history of everyone being buried in books sort of sealed my fate. Oh, and my dad writes every day of his life. He doesn’t care about being published, the writing itself is paramount to him.
How long have you been writing? I’ve been writing fiction for 13 or 14 years, but it was when my son was born prematurely and I reduced my workload to be at home more that I decided I would treat writing as my job—even with my regular, formal part-time work.
When did you first know you could be a writer? I wrote my first novel and two of my neighbors would read it and give me feedback. The book had a ton of problems, but they would pull out the parts where they laughed their asses off or they felt it was moving or powerful or a character was strong and even with the novel’s problems, they would encourage me and in their reactions to what did work, I found the place in me that said, “this is what you should be doing…” I think they really demonstrated the power others have in supporting someone’s work.
What inspires you to write and why? Life! Nearly everything I see is inspirational to me in some way. Even boring events are ripe with material. The way one woman digs through her purse and pokes at her phone with her long nails slipping off the buttons, or the man who is so bored he doesn’t realize he’s just picked his nose in a room full of fellow parents…there is no experience that isn’t in some way usable in my writing. What genre are you most comfortable writing?
What inspired you to write your first book? College life inspired my first book. I lived with one of the most interesting people I’ve ever met. She was absolutely everything I was not—self-assured, sassy, brilliant, carefree, self-depricating, and a smoker. We were both drinkers…but we just clicked on some level and spent so much time doing stupid, dangerous/hilarious things that never failed to make me think, “oh, my God, I have to write about this…” I’m not sure I’ve ever met anyone else like her—someone with such a fully developed sense of who she was and what she needed to do or not do to accomplish her goals.
