Pendelton Wallace on the Importance of Blogging for Authors #AmWriting #IndieAuthors #Blogger

Why Blogging is Important

I don’t know if blogging works or not. I have been told it takes five years to build a viable book selling business. I’m in year one. I’m taking on faith that some of these things are going to pay off someday.

For me, blogging is important because it builds your reader base. I started out with blogs about my adventures sailing down the coast to Mexico. I got about two hundred hits per post and was pretty happy. Then I hit the jack pot.

I live with my girlfriend and her Great Dane on my 56-foot sailboat. People always ask “How do you live on a boat with such a big dog?” I decided to write a blog post about living with a Great Dane.

One post became three. Then Odin, the Great Dane in question, took exception to what I was writing about him and wanted to set the record straight. He wrote about three blogs, to which I had to respond.

During this blog debate, readers started flocking to my blog. Dawn, my significant other, posted the blogs to her Great Dane Facebook groups, I posted to my sailing/cruising groups and people just appeared from nowhere. Suddenly, thousands of people were reading my blogs.

Has it done any good? Not a lot. My book sales are still pretty low, but I get email from readers saying things like “I really liked your blog, so I decided to buy your book.” Now I just need to get more people to follow suit.

If Clive Cussler had written Ugly Betty, it would be Hacker for Hire.

Hacker for Hire, a suspense novel about corporate greed and industrial espionage, is the second book in a series about Latino computer security analyst Ted Higuera and his best friend, para-legal Chris Hardwick.

The goofy, off-beat Ted Higuera, son of Mexican immigrants, grew up in East LA. An unlikely football scholarship brought him to Seattle.

Chris, Ted’s college roommate, grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth. His father is the head of one of Seattle’s most prestigious law firms.

Ted’s first job out of college leads him into the world of organized crime where he faces a brutal beating. After being rescued by beautiful private investigator Catrina Flaherty, Ted decides to go to work for her.

Catrina is hired by a large computer corporation to find a leak in their corporate boardroom when the previous consultant is found floating in Elliot Bay.

Ted discovers that Chris’s firm has been retained by their prime suspect. Now he and Chris are working opposite sides of the same case.

Ted and Catrina are led deep into Seattle’s Hi-Tech world as they stalk the killer. But the killer is also hunting them. Can Ted find the killer before the killer finds him?

@MargaretWestlie on Her New #Book, Meditation and Her Favourite Meal #AmWriting #HistFic

Tell us about your new book? What’s it about and why did you write it?
Anna’s Secret is the story about a murder in Lyndale, Prince Edward Island, that took place in the mid-nineteenth century.   Her name was Anne and the hollow where the murder took place is called Anne Beaton’s Hollow to this day.  The real story is that an ancestor of my own was the one who did her in with a turnip hoe.  He was acquitted and subsequently left the Island.  My uncle who told me the story said they ultimately decided that it was a woman who did the deed, and that it was crime of passion.  Anne was, as they used to say, “no better than she should be” and was said to have been having an affair with the woman’s husband.  I took the fact of her murder and fictionalized it.  I examined Anna’s relationship with her own husband, son, neighbours and friends and the impact it had on the whole community.  The ending that I created is pretty much unexpected and for reasons that no one in the fictional community guessed.
When you are not writing, how do you like to relax?
I read, write letters, visit family, sing in the church choir.  We just earned silver in the provincial District Music Festival.  I frequently talk on the phone to my friends who are far away whom I don’t get to see very often.  I watch TV but but only shows where the characters have good relations with one another.  I especially like British mysteries and dramas.  Right now I’m watching Call the Midwife, Father Brown, and The Cafe.  I have seen all the Sherlock Holmes episodes.
Do you have any tips on how writers can relax?
Meditation, Reiki, the sort of thing that feeds the spirit and the imagination.  If you don’t feed your imagination by reading and listening to others tell their story, you are in danger of running dry.  Meditation allows stories to percolate through your mind and transform themselves into something you can write about as your own.  It’s not right or kind to write what you hear verbatim.  People are sensitive and rightly so.  Besides, I think it may be considered theft of intellectual property should anyone care to pursue it.  The whole idea of meditation and Reiki is to relax and let go, and what’s more comforting and uplifting than a good book?
How often do you write? And when do you write?
Every day, usually in the morning.  I find I’m more productive in the morning.  I’ve trained people not to call me in the morning just to chat.  If I write in the afternoon I figure it’s my own fault if I get interrupted.  I write poetry pretty much whenever I’m inspired.  My clip board is never far away.  I have to be in poetry mode.  It’s quite a different process from writing prose.
Have you met any people in the industry who have really helped you?
Not in the industry.  A few peripheral to it, booksellers, librarians etc.  I really haven’t had any contact with anyone in the industry; my contacts tend to be in academia where I get lots of encouragement for the writing itself but they’re in the same boat as I am, trying to get published.
What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel?
I think I’d like them to realize the importance of community and friends no matter how much they may annoy, e.g. Hector and Duncan, characters in Anna’s Secret.  Society is so fragmented today we’ve lost that sense of belonging somewhere.  I want readers to enjoy the stories enough to want to read more.  I want my novels to be an escape into other times.  I think of Anna, and how she isn’t what people thought she was, and how important it is to be patient and discerning about people.  In other words, don’t jump to conclusions about people too quickly; there may be deeper reasons for their behaviours.
What’s your favourite meal?
I love beef stew made with fresh organic Prince Edward Island beef with organic carrots, potatoes, onions and maybe a little celery.  All in a lovely smooth gravy thickened with corn starch.  Organic makes such a difference, even just in taste.  Fish is also a favourite.  We get fresh cod right off the boat and serve it fried with bacon and onions and new potatoes and vegetables.
What colour represents your personality the most?
I think I gravitate to the blues especially to royal blue.  I find blues of any shade very serene and I tend to be fairly serene and accepting.  Look at my book jacket picture to see the effect of royal blue.  I also wear pinks well and now that my hair has turned silver I can wear cherry reds and black to advantage.  My hair used to be dark brown with red highlights but I went white at a very young age.  Of course, my complexion is so pale it needs a little judicious help from Revlon.  Less is more these days.
How do you feel about social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter? Are they a good thing?
I am just getting used to being so public and am still uneasy about saying certain things to my new best friends and all their friends and acquaintances.  However, I do see the value of being more available to the public in this way, even just for the feeling of connectedness no matter how tenuous.  Of course, the advertising possibilities play a role too.  I have always been a private person who kept my business to myself so it’s difficult.

Anna Gillis, the midwife and neighbour in Mattie’s Story, has been found killed. The close-knit community is deeply shaken by this eruption of violence, and neighbours come together to help one another and to discover the perpetrator. But the answer lies Anna’s secret, long guarded by Old Annie, the last of the original Selkirk Settlers, and the protagonist of An Irregular Marriage. Join the community! A.F. Ebbers on "Life is Not a Rose Garden" #AmReading #Mystery #Suspense

How do you write – lap top, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk?
Lap top on a desk.

How much sleep do you need to be your best?
Six to seven hours.

Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge and thank for their support?
My wife, she is a retired college English professor and librarian, my daughter who is a former High school English teacher and now is an attorney and a tennis friend who is a retired editor and helped to edit my hardback novel.

When you are not writing, how do you like to relax?
Tennis, playing the piano, attending plays and musicals, reading.

How often do you write? And when do you write?
When I’m doing a novel I write every day, sometimes usually into the wee hours of the morning.

What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel?
That life is not a rose garden. But staying honest and being true to yourself may be hard but it’ usually pays off in the end.

What’s your favorite meal?
Bacon and eggs and Texas toast.

What movie do you love to watch?
“North by Northwest” and “7 Days of the Condor”.

What’s your next project?
Another screenplay.

How do you feel about self-publishing?
It has its’ advantages. Publishers cannot change your title, content, etc. And you keep the all the profits. But promoting the book is hard. And if a hardback book is a failure, you take the loss.

A Day in the Life of Belinda Vasquez Garcia @MagicProse #BlogTour #Romance #Suspense

It’s midnight. I wish there was time to be more social, but I’ve just finished up the 2nd draft of the final book of my Land of Enchantment trilogy. There are two blog tours coming up, and a book festival 2400 miles away, all within a two month period. I have a short piece of fiction to edit, which I plan to publish in the next 3 weeks. And there’s a new novel that needs editing, which I hope to publish in 7 weeks.
After seven hours sleep, I walk the dog so my husband can sleep late. I feed my cat, Shakespeare, and then take 10 minutes for breakfast.
I drive to my Zumba class. I’m shaking my hips, moving my feet, loving the music, feeling relaxed and BAM! My brain decides to start writing one of three other books I’m hoping to do this year. My characters speak, or scream, or narration spills out of my head. They’re sentences, paragraphs, plot, or characters that will vanish forever if not put on paper. So, I leave the exercise line and look for paper in my purse. I walk out to the YMCA lobby, grab an exercise schedule and scribble on the back the gold my mind has just mined. I grab a few extra sheets, just in case. I run back to class.
I get home and throw the piece of new writing on top of a pile of others. I shower, and I’m back at it on the computer.
I stop for a 15 minute lunch during which time I watch Netflix streaming or Reign, which I’ve taped, or I watch The Bates Motel, or Once Upon a Time on Demand.
I clean up my dishes and make any pressing phone calls that can’t wait until evening.
I go back to the computer and write again, or damn myself for surfing the web and wasting time.
I go to dinner with my husband. Quick, I grab a napkin and scribble. We drive home and the new piece of writing on the napkin goes in the pile.
I get on the computer and do any personal stuff, like pay bills.
I start writing again.
I’ve promised myself that I’ll watch a movie at 8:00 or 9:00. I tell myself to only do non-writing book stuff, such as marketing, on Tuesdays, but some things can’t wait until Tuesday, such as that audio book and Best Historical Fiction award that came out four months ago which I’ve been meaning to email people about or post on Facebook. I manage an email to another group of mine and check it off my list.
I draft an email about my Books into Movies Award I received ten months ago for the first book of my trilogy, and about the Best Fantasy Finalist award I got for the second book three months ago. I hit the save button. I’m waiting a couple of weeks until the last book of my trilogy comes out to make all announcements together.
For the umpteenth time, I tell myself that I should faithfully post to my blog every week.
It is 10:00 now. I still haven’t gotten off the computer to watch that movie. I’m lost in my new novel, and that’s really the best place to be.

Lazar's Target (Jack Lazar Series) by Kevin Sterling @ksterlingwriter #BlogTour #AmReading #TBR

Sergei Mikhailova faded into the shadows of the dockside building and lit a cigarette as he waited for the courier with the critical package. He flipped closed the Zippo lighter he had stolen from an American tourist, took a long draw off the rich Marlboro Red and exhaled through his nose, the rising smoke sifting through the light above him. Without his cherished cigarettes and regular shots of vodka, he didn’t know how he would cope with his arduous and demanding job.
It was dead silent out there except for the occasional ship blowing its fog horn in the distance, and because of the late hour, there wasn’t another person in sight. The air was bitterly cold, so the intermittent breeze carrying the ocean’s salty humidity stung his face like sharp needles, and his ears felt like they might fall off. The area also reeked of dead fish, which made his stomach turn, but the strong tobacco was starting to help.
As he waited and smoked, he noticed the huge piles of dirty snow up and down the dock, which had no doubt been plowed in layers from one storm after another. The sight of it made the place seem all that more frigid and revolting.
One thing was for sure. He didn’t want to wait there any longer than absolutely necessary.
Sergei checked his watch. It was ten minutes after midnight, which meant the courier was late or, God forbid, not coming. The thought of the latter possibility turned his stomach again, and he quickly took another drag off his precious smoke.
The item he awaited was essential in paving the way for Alexei Chernikova’s master plan, and Sergei knew the man trusted no one else to ensure its safe delivery to their office in St. Petersburg. It was such a crucial component, in fact, that even the slightest hitch in tonight’s plan made Sergei anxious.
Failure was not an option, and suffering it at the hands of another was totally unacceptable. So, with every minute that passed, Sergei became more and more enraged, and the likelihood of this delinquent courier leaving the docks alive grew less and less.
Finally, the white compact car he was told to expect approached in the distance, and it slowly weaved through containers, barrels and snow piles until it stopped at the far edge of the next warehouse building. It sat there for a moment before backing up, hesitating, and finally turning right.
What is this idiot doing?
Anger swelled inside him as he watched the car disappear behind the structure. And for several minutes thereafter, all he could see were lights dancing this way and that as the driver apparently searched for the drop-off point. The package was so close Sergei could almost taste it, but this buffoon was playing keep away with the damned thing like a sadistic teenager.
Sergei had certainly killed people for less.
He lit another cigarette and continued to wait as the cold started to seep into his bones. His fingers grew stiff, and his feet were so numb he could hardly feel them. And all of it was because of this asinine courier.
Finally, the car rounded the near corner of the building as if the driver had circled the structure’s entire perimeter. But now he was back on track, continuing along the dock.
Sergei was relieved until he saw the vehicle stop again.
Now what?
The interior light came on, and the car sat there for several minutes as if the driver was reacquainting himself with the directions.
Imbecile!
Sergei drew on his cigarette and continued to steam. He fantasized about wrapping his hands around the driver’s neck and feeling the pleasure of snapping it in his grasp. Just the fantasy of doing it made him shiver with satisfaction. Or maybe it was just the goddamn cold.
The car continued ahead, albeit at a snail’s pace, but it eventually pulled up to the designated drop-off point, twenty minutes late.
Not fucking acceptable.
Sergei was tempted to approach the vehicle, snatch the package from the driver, and shoot him in the head. But that simply would not do. Instead, he stepped into the light to reveal his presence, worked the stiffness out of his neck, and waited for the man to emerge from the car. The courier would come to him, not the other way around.
The driver’s door opened, and the man stepped out. He was a small, skinny guy wearing a black overcoat, and he held a small parcel, about the size of a cereal box. He made eye contact and brought it over.
“What took you so fucking long?” Sergei growled as he dropped the cigarette butt to the concrete and crushed it with his shoe.
“Sorry. I had a lot of trouble finding the place. All these warehouse buildings look the same, and I didn’t see any addresses.”
Neither did I, but I still made it here on time.
Sergei took the package and slipped it into his empty attaché case, which sat on the crate next to him. He flipped the latches closed and glared at the little man, fantasizing about how he would best enjoy killing him.
“Where is my payment?” the courier asked.
“Payment?” Sergei belted out a throaty, foul laugh and coughed through it. “Here it is.” He reached inside his coat, pulled the trusty knife from the sheath at his belt and let fury drive him. He swiped the blade and slashed the man’s carotid artery before the bastard even knew what was coming.
The driver clasped his hands around his throat and dropped to his knees as blood seeped through his fingers. Then he fell to his side, coughing and gurgling as Sergei watched over the scene with pleasure.
It was tempting after that to stab the son of a bitch like crazy and work out his frustrations, but it was hardly necessary. Besides, he was having so much fun watching the idiot gasp, flounder and die on the ground beneath him.
The feeling of sheer power was exhilarating.
Satisfied that the courier was finally dead, Sergei dragged him back to his car, opened the door and worked him into in the driver’s seat. He belted him in, turned the key to start the ignition and rolled down the window before closing the door. Then he reached inside, shifted the car into gear and used the steering wheel to direct it off the side of the dock.
He heard the heavy splash as he walked to the edge and watched the vehicle slowly bob and sink into the ocean, thankful that the dock lights were so bright. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to see everything, and could there possibly be a more splendid sight?
The rear end of the car made a sucking sound as it finally disappeared beneath the surface, and the deed was done.
There were no words to describe Sergei’s satisfaction. He finally had the package in his custody, and the bastard who had no respect for the importance of the exchange had been handily eliminated. He had completed the most important step toward Alexei’s glorious new era. And who knew…maybe there would be a place for him in the annals of history.

"James Bond Meets Fifty Shades of Grey"

Immerse yourself in the world class novels that combine action, mystery & suspense with tantalizing and tastefully written erotica. You’ll find all your sensibilities roused at once with Kevin Sterling’s ultra-sexy, action-packed Jack Lazar Series.

In this fourth action-packed thriller, Jack travels to Denmark for a business venture, but what seems to be a textbook transaction turns into a nightmare after he gets involved with Katarina, a vivacious Danish girl who apparently lacks a moral compass, not to mention an off button. After naively believing their liaison was just a random encounter, Jack discovers she’s connected to his business deal, and there’s a dangerous political group with skin in the game, too.
Katarina makes a convincing case of being a victim, not part of the conspiracy, but can Jack really trust her?
The firestorm gets out of control as Jack digs deeper, unearths the convoluted plot behind it all, and discovers that innocent people are being heartlessly killed. He’s not only horrified by the reason why it’s happening, but how it’s being done, and there appears to be no way to stop it from occurring again.
Then the scheme’s real objective emerges, launching Jack into action with intelligence operatives to prevent it. But that’s not so easy with assassins on Jack’s tail, forcing him to struggle for survival while trying to prevent Katarina from getting caught in the crossfire.

Message of the Pendant by Thomas Thorpe #BookClub #MustRead #Thriller

The room was not completely dark. High above the floor, five window slits provided flickering bursts of light whenever distant lightning struck. Beneath dark wooden beams, flashes created menacing shadows that quickly disappeared until the next glimmer.
Huddled in a corner with her sister, Emily, the wait became excruciating for Elizabeth. Where was the stalker now?
A large stone fireplace under an antlered head of a stag stood at the far side of the room. She decided to edge over to the hearth and look for a tool or piece of wood which could be used against the blackguard.
On hands and knees, she carefully advanced along the room’s perimeter trying not to make any noise. Fifteen feet, ten feet, five.., she felt the bricks. She reached out for a poker, but had to settle for a two-foot log, three inches in diameter. Clutching her prize, she turned to start back. A new creak punctured the air in the middle of the room.
She froze.
Several English chairs and Queen Anne upholstered seats rested between game tables, turned at various angles to her sight. The sound had come from there. She stared at the outlines.
Lightning flashed again. To her terror, a dark figure rose behinda seat turned away from the chimney. Light disappeared before she could see anything more.
Elizabeth's mind raced, wondering if she had been heard.
Another flash. The figure had moved toward Emily’s corner.
“Emily! Emily!” she screamed. “Wake up. Someone’s coming toward you!”
She could hear Emily stirring, muttering words that made it clear she did not understanding their plight.  She had to help her sister! Her legs felt weak and a rush of panic welled up inside her. She could not move.
Glint came again. The figure had stopped.

Flash Bang by Kellen Burden @KellenBurden #Mystery #Thriller #Excerpt

The next day is one of those days you don’t remember waking up to. Suddenly you look up and you’re pouring yourself another cup of coffee in your underwear, and you don’t know how you got there. The TV’s on, too. Some Saturday morning kid show at half volume. I don’t know what the fuck is going on in it, so I turn it up. The guy in the giant purple dick-shaped suit is telling the black dude with the orange afro that he can’t find his apples, and then they spell the word apple and dance until I turn the channel. Parents wonder why kids are so crazy: dick guy can’t find his apples. I start to ease off the couch, wheeze once and fall back down onto it. My legs are sunbaked rubber bands. My chest feels like a fat kid’s trampoline. I claw my way back up to standing with a grunt, try to stretch it out, but all my limbs feel like they were made without joints. I’m like Gumby in a dehydrator. Shuffle into the kitchen and toast a bagel, heat up a pan for eggs, quietly admit that it feels good to be sore from rebuilding my body instead of destroying it one beer at a time. When the pan’s hot enough I melt some butter into it, crack an egg in there, and shuffle into the bathroom to turn on the shower.
My knuckles are soft and red from rolling on the hard pack, and I have little scratches on my forearms, bruises all over. In the kitchen the yolk is starting to get hard and I slide the egg out of the pan onto one of my multitude of randomly assorted Goodwill plates. A rainbow coalition of bachelorhood. The bagel jumps out of the toaster and I slather it in cream cheese, slide the halves in around the egg, carry it to the couch and shove it in my face while the news rolls. No more stabbings. No more talk of them, anyway. Cold front is easing off, temperature rising steadily into midweek. As the weatherman motions enthusiastically at an amorphous blob whipping up off the Denver Metro area like a brush fire, I finish off my breakfast and grunt my way back into the bathroom, wondering what the fuck they put in the weather guy’s hair to get it to stick straight up like that, and whether he’s seen the film Something About Mary. Steam’s fogged the mirror, and the water is too hot to stand under right at first, so I twist the cold on a little, breathe the humidity and stare into my soft-focus reflection.
After the shower I throw some jeans on that I’ve been wearing for so many days straight that they could probably stand up on their own. T-shirt, thermal, wool socks, work boots. My phone says it’s 55 outside; too warm for the Carhartt, and I can’t conceal the SIG under this thermal. In the closet closest to the bathroom there’s a safe in a hole in the wall. It’s about four feet tall, three feet wide, and deep enough to house some documents, a few thousand in cash, and a treasure trove of boom boom. I pull my compact Glock 23 from the soft rack inside the door, stuff it into a concealment holster in the back of my pants, and check it in the mirror. Looks good. The gun; I look like a hobo, but that’s kind of my deal, so we’re good.
Outside on the stoop I look up the street, down the street. Civic on the corner, waiting for a break in the pounding Colfax traffic; homeless-looking guy wandering around with a paper bag of what I can only assume is apple juice; Denver gray, touch of heat. I finished off all three of my detective novels since I bought them, and the Kerouac was just a bit too heavy for this kind of winter. Maybe too heavy for my kind of dysfunction. Bits and pieces of my dreams lying like shards of broken glass in a dark room for me to step on. A noise, an image, and some fucked-up flashback scrambles from the back of my brain like a startled creature. Yesterday on my way to the park, a helicopter came in low to film something going on downtown, and I almost bit through my lip before I knew I was anxious. The night before, I woke up at 1:00 a.m., standing in the middle of the living room, naked, sweat running off my face and down into my chest, shivering. I don’t know why.
